Wilmslow vs Oxton

Match Report: Wilmsbury Ladies vs Oxton 15/03/25

With the season drawing to close, the Wilmsbury Ladies played their toughest remaining game last weekend — hosting a formidable Oxton at home.

We knew that our chances of winning this one were slim at best (Oxton really are a fantastic team!), so we went into the game with three objectives: practise some new attacking plays, take good care of the ball on the transition, and pressure the opposition on their goalie clears. We wanted to seize every opportunity to practice ahead of our more competitive games in the coming weeks, and of course, the Junior Flags Final in April!

In classic Wilmsbury style, the first half was perhaps not our best… Despite some fierce defensive sets, and incredible saves from our goalie Kate, the Oxton tallies were starting to pile up. But we kept our heads up, and saw the positives — we were sliding well, our clearing was getting better, and Grace W scored a lovely free-position goal. We still had more to give! Our new aim: limit the opposition to 20 goals.

The third quarter was by far the best yet — and perhaps “the best of the season” according to some in the huddle! The clearing was easier, we were creating more 50/50 balls on the circle, we had the greater proportion of possession, and another goal from a fab, settled attack. Neither team was afraid to play physically… though perhaps slightly too physical, with both sides receiving a yellow card. Defensively, we gave as good as we got — super-strong body, sliding on a string, and 100% effort on the groundballs.

All in all, the Wilmsbury women put in a performance to be really proud of! We’re getting better and stronger every week, thanks to the whole team’s amazing efforts and positive attitudes. Our well-deserved Woman of the Match went to Kate for making some truly extraordinary saves — absolute scenes!

And thanks to Oxton for a brilliant game too — what doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you ;)

See you next week!
