Wilmslow 1st vs Mersey A

Wilmslow 1st vs Mersey A

After a loss to Mersey A early in the season the Wilmslow team were hungry for the win. With a slight misunderstanding with player availability and one player being called into work at very short notice, Wilmslow fielded a team of just 12 players, although Mersey were missing a few key players Wilmslow were more focused on themselves than the opposition.

On the back of 4 straight wins Wilmslow started well and opened the score through attacker Daryl Chatterton who went on to score 2 more during the period in a heated quarter that ended 5-3 in favour of Wilmslow.

The second quarter saw the two teams exchange blows and Wilmslow played a good amount of man down during which Mersey would add a couple of goals to the scoreboard but Wilmslow finished the half strongly with some very disciplined offensive to go into half time 8-5 up.

The third quarter was mostly about Mersey but also saw some questionable calls which saw Wilmslow on the back foot for much of the 20 minute period. Going into the quarter 9-8 down.

Wilmslow came out refocused on their job and proved that they have grown as a team, Mellor grabbed his second of the game. The men in gold pulled one back to get within one. With a man up opportunity of a 2 minute penalty with just over 2.5 minutes left, Coach Perrin called a timeout giving instructions for a wide set to retain possession and kill the clock but to end with a shot still. The man up executed the play perfectly with Chatterton getting his 4th of the game while sucking up a late check. Eastwood won the face and Perrin called his final timeout, Wilmslow came out of the timeout killing the clock, Eastwood had opportunity in the last seconds but his shot found the back of the Mersey net a split second after the final whistle.

A real test of character for Wilmslow and a testament of how much the team has grown and learnt over the season. The W puts the team 4th in the league and an ever growing chance of promotion back to the Premier division.

Next week to go again.
