After last week’s heavy 14-4 defeat in the cup, our squad returned to the field determined to prove a point against Brooklands. And while the final scoreline of 10-6 may still go down as a loss, this was a very different contest—one defined by grit, resilience, and a defense that refused to break.
From the first whistle, the energy was different. Sparks led the charge with his trademark aggressive play, finding the net twice as his relentless pressure paid off—not to mention his determination to contribute even more as he dropped down to dominate the faceoffs in the second half, giving Adam a well-deserved breather.
Scott also bagged a brace, showcasing his signature drive from up top and unleashing an unstoppable step-down shot past the Brooklands keeper. Additionally, Adam and Seth—our midfield juggernauts—came up big with crucial “right place, right time” goals to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Unfortunately, a single quarter of poor technique in clearing and passing allowed Brooklands to widen the gap, proving to be a costly lapse.
Defensively, Tom and Gabe set the tone, striking the perfect balance between discipline and physicality. Their smart, well-timed aggression kept Brooklands’ attack in check for long stretches, while Connors provided some vital clips to disrupt their offensive rhythm. Meanwhile, the mobile strategist known as Mr. Jones orchestrated Wilmslow’s defensive chess match, ensuring our captain and leader—on and off the pitch—could keep a strong Brooklands attack at bay, deflecting shots with every body part and his stick.
Perhaps the most frustrating factor was that Wilmslow simply needed more time! As the match wore on, momentum was shifting in our favor. Had we been given those extra 10 minutes, the outcome might have been very different.
But Mikey and Jimmy in the attack started to gel to provided great ball movement resulting in assists to Sparks and Seth.
Also Sam Beswick and Lincoln stepping up proving there Wilmslow worth is also a note worth mentioning.
Despite the loss, this was a performance to be proud of. The gap between the two sides has closed dramatically in just a week, and we walk away knowing that next time, we’ll be ready.
