Oddballs Festival – Match Report
The Wilmslow Mixed Lacrosse team descended on Nottingham for the annual Oddballs Festival—a day packed with competitive lacrosse, good vibes, and plenty of sunshine. With four confirmed fixtures and a festival-style 6’s format (7-minute halves and women’s adapted rules), we were in for an intense and energetic day.
Game 1 – University of Nottingham
We kicked off the day against the University of Nottingham (who potentially had a home advantage, given we had all travelled from 7am to get there). Still finding our rhythm, we struggled to get going and suffered our only loss of the tournament, 3-1. A tough start, but one that lit a fire under the team. Goals from Sam.
Game 2 – Derby Hurricanes
Next up, the Derby Hurricanes. Much improved and sharper on both ends of the pitch, we battled to a thrilling 4-4 draw in an end-to-end game that showcased our growing cohesion. Joe threw some shots but all saved by the goalie. In the end goals from Sam, Alys.
Game 3 – Leicester City Boars
After a long lunch break and some much-needed shade, we knew it was time to perform. A high-energy 4-4 draw against Leicester City Boars was enough to secure us a place in the semi-final of the Plate competition. Goals from India, Sam.
Semi-Final – University of York
The semi-final was personal. With five Lancaster alumni on our side, facing York stirred up some old varsity rivalries—and it showed. Fuelled by pride and passion, we absolutely dominated York, sealing a 7-1 victory. Kate was popping around the pitch, and Sam was unstoppable, finally hitting his stride with some outrageous behind-the-back finishes. Harry was on top form, subbing rapidly, with goals from Beth and Sam, and Mike.
Final – University of Leicester
The Plate final saw us face the University of Leicester. After a long, hard day of games, the team talk was short and sweet: “Win, and have good vibes.”
We started strong, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime. Kels held strong positions, making space for the team to cut and weave. Monkey was sensational diving for saves. But Leicester responded, equalising and then edging ahead 3-2. With just two minutes left, the score sat at 4-4; sudden death loomed. But with 30 seconds to go, Kat stepped up and smashed home the game-winner. The final whistle blew, and Wilmslow were crowned Oddballs Plate Champions! Goals from Sam, Meg and Kat.
A brilliant day of sunshine, lacrosse, and great energy - our mixed team’s unbeaten streak continues. Sam was our top goal scorer with about 15 goals to him, with 7 of our team getting a goal within the day. Thank you to our oddballs host and hopefully see you next year where we may win that cup!
