What an incredible season it's been for the A team. It was only last season that they were promoted from the bottom division and yet they have not only competed at a higher level but have ended the season by toppled league leaders Brooklands A handing them their second loss of the season. Victory has secured a second place finish, normally this would mean instant promoted and back to back promotions are as rare as hen's teeth, as it stands promotion is blocked...by Wilmslow first team in the division above. Now here's where things get somewhat tricky to understand, a win this coming Saturday for Wilmslow 1st vs Stockport A would see Wilmslow first finish 3rd in Championship 1, losing out on the 2nd place to Cheadle A by just 1 goal in head to head results in their 2 fixtures against each other, 2nd place would have earnt Wilmslow promotion by Cheadle A cannot do up due to their 1st team being in the top division....stay with me...Wilmslow will play a game vs Heaton Mersey 1st team on the 10th May. Mersey are placed 2nd to bottom in the Prem due to head to head goal difference vs Stockport 1st and both teams finished the season on just 11 points. Should Wilmslow 1st win this game then Wilmslow A will also be promoted, has their ever been a more exciting end to the lacrosse season? Saturday's win for the A team is a credit to the leadership of man of the match and team captain, Matt Croney who has proven over and over again to be a leader of men as well as a damn fine goalkeeper. Wilmslow took the lead and never looked back, in fact they led Brooklands by 4 goals on two occasions during the game. Much frustration throughout the Brooklands team could be seen, they are a team who have not been used to being behind and chasing the game. Despite an outstanding display from the young Brooklands goalie and a few long pole defenders who would not lpok out of place in a Premier team, Wilmslow would find a way through to goal. Great team play along with solid performances from Matt Croney, Widdowson on the face off, Eastwood in attack, Philips and Powell through midfield and Marshall having one of his best games of the year in defense would see a victorious Wilmslow A finish the game 10-7.
