Text Box: Rob Lord

My name is Rob Lord and I am extremely excited and privileged to be the 2010-2011 LDO at Wilmslow LC. This opportunity will be my first time visiting England, and I am eager to learn and experience the culture, people, and lacrosse of Wilmslow and Cheshire County.

Lacrosse has been a part of my life since I was nine years old when I began playing on the first youth team in my hometown of Westborough, Massachusetts. Westborough is a community of approximately10,000 people and is about 20 miles west of Boston. I have lived in Westborough since I was six years old with my parents Kate and Bob. My mother is a Learning Disabilities Specialist and Educator and has been teaching for over 30 years. My father has been involved his entire adult life with football both in playing and coaching and currently works for National Football League Operations.

Competitive athletics and strong academics have always been part of my family life. Both of my parents have been involved with college programs both in academic and athletic venues. I have grown up on and around college campuses. These experiences helped me to chart a course that would include competition on the field along with challenging academics.
I was a three sport athlete in high school, playing varsity American Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse. I played on the first varsity lacrosse team for my high school, and was able to assist in leading the team to a league championship my senior year and state semi-finals. I was a two year captain in lacrosse, and chose to go to Union College to play both football and lacrosse.
I recently graduated from Union College in Schenectady NY, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History.  I chose Union due to the high level of academics, competitive Division III athletics, and the opportunity to play two sports in college. While I was at Union, I was fortunate enough to travel and study in New Zealand and Australia, where my focus was on the use of geothermal energy. I am hoping to continue my studies in environmental law and policy when I return to the States following my time in England.

Athletic life at Union was a phenomenal experience for me. I embraced the camaraderie of my teammates along with the rigor of daily practice and thrilled at the competition. Although I injured my knee in my second year and chose to not play football for my last two years at college, I was a four year starter at close defense for the Dutchmen Lacrosse team. Our team was 5-9 my first year, yet a competitive class of players coupled with a reputable and knowledgeable coach, Paul Wehrum, combined to have ULax post records of 12-4, 9-7, and 11-4 in the next three seasons. We were able to make the Liberty League playoffs during those years, reaching the finals during my sophomore year. Additionally, we were able to post multiple top 20 rankings in the United States over that time period. My senior year our team had the top statistical defense in the country in Division III, and we were able to keep opponents to a very “low goals against average” due to our athletic capabilities and defensive schemes. I have learned a great deal while playing defense for the past 8 years. I was honored to be recognized as both an All-League Academic player and defensemen during my tenure at Union College.

Lacrosse has been an important part of my active lifestyle, however, other pursuits interest me as well. In addition to lacrosse, football and basketball, I enjoy snowboarding and skiing, hiking, swimming and all manner of water sports. I also greatly enjoy reading, cooking, music (played some piano and saxophone in high school band).

Coaching has been a part of my entire life, as my father was a collegiate football coach at several colleges and universities throughout the Northeast. My coaching experience began when I would go with my father to practices when I was 6 years old and he would give me a “coaching” job to do at every practice. I have had numerous coaching experiences including:
·        Coaching the U12 teams in Westborough throughout high school
·        Coaching Westborough Clinics throughout high school and college
·        Coached numerous clinics and camps while at Union
·        Refereed youth games throughout high school

I look forward to being able to share my knowledge with the players of Wilmslow and especially anticipate meeting the members and players in the club in a couple of weeks. I am extremely excited to begin playing and coaching for the Wilmslow Lacrosse Club!
